This week I have been looking at biotechnology streetwear brand Pangaia from London. Pangaia has achieved a strong mix of trend appeal and innovative technology, for example, patenting their own FLWRDWN™ technology as a vegan, sustainable alternative to feather and down. Many brands and mainstream factories will tell you that natural/botanical dyes are not colourfast and are widely unavailable, but Pangaia seem to have figured out a formula that works. We have also seen other innovative, large-scale brands such as Adidas, Nike and Eileen Fisher releasing natural dye ranges. Pangaia have a disclaimer against each relevant item advising that colouring will vary item to item. Surely this is perfectly acceptable to today’s consumer and can be used to add value in the uniqueness of the product?
One interesting and questionable product I found on their website was the Kangaroo ‘Protect The Species’ T-shirt. Kangaroos are an official pest in Australia and although having suffered from the bushfires of 2019/2020 they are by no means endangered. It is however great that they are donating money to Australia’s endangered wildlife and notably another product pictures a Koala which is in fact endangered. Surely a little more care and research in the actual cause is warranted.
Pangaia has a focus on philanthropy on their site and advise that for each item purchased ‘1 purchase = 1 Mangrove tree = 1 ton CO2 sequestered’ as well as a donation towards Doctors Without Borders. Its always great to feel like you have done something good when you are treating yourself to new clothing!
Overall I think this is an incredibly inspiring brand at the forefront of making innovation and sustainability on trend. Other noteworthy details include Seaweed fibre garments and cotton basics made from organic and recycled cotton. The brand is quickly growing and releasing new product, I cant wait to see what they doo next!
